The Sun Inn is a historic village pub in Eryrys, near Mold in North Wales. Sitting high in the Clwydian Range, close to the former St David’s Church, it has long been one of the central meeting places in the village.
Eryrys itself has a rich local history. The village grew around farming, quarrying and the lead and zinc mining that shaped this part of Flintshire and Denbighshire for centuries. In that setting, The Sun Inn became more than just a place to drink. It was a social hub for local workers, families, travellers and the wider community.
The exact age of the pub is difficult to prove without historic deeds or licensing records, but it is widely described as dating back to the 18th century. What we do know is that by 1882 The Sun Inn was already a well-established fully licensed inn, with gardens, stables, cottages and outbuildings. That tells us it was an important local business by the late Victorian period.
Over the years, The Sun Inn has remained a traditional country pub, known for its stone-built character, real ales, food, local atmosphere and its remarkable upland setting. It is also often described as one of the highest pubs in Wales.
In recent years, the pub’s story has entered a new chapter. Like many rural pubs, The Sun Inn faced the challenge of remaining viable in a changing world. Rather than lose such an important village asset, local people came together through The Sun Inn Community Pub project to protect its future.
From 1 April 2026, The Sun Inn became a community-run pub. This means its future is now shaped by the people who care about it most: the local community, regulars, visitors and supporters who want to see it continue as a welcoming village pub for generations to come.
Today, The Sun Inn continues the role it has played for well over a century: a place to meet, eat, drink, talk, celebrate, shelter from the weather, and enjoy the best of village life in beautiful North Wales.
